Socotra isn’t just another destination: it’s like visiting a new world. Here you’ll discover alien landscapes, untouched beaches and surreal flora- most famously, the Dragon’s Blood tree once seen is unforgettable.
Once you’ve decided to go, the next big question is: group tour or private tour?
At Rocky Road Travel, we offer both options: small group tours and fully customised private departures. Here’s how to decide which style suits you best.
Group Tours: Shared Experience, Small Numbers
Our scheduled group tours to Socotra run from September to May, avoiding the summer monsoon season. We’ve now confirmed seven group tours per year, with departures in February, March, April, October, November and December, plus a special New Year’s Tour.
Every group is capped at 10 people. That’s because we want to keep the experience personal, flexible, and far from the chaos of mass tourism.
Benefits of a Group Tour:
- Cost-effective. Group tours are more affordable as costs are shared across the group, especially with fixed logistics like 4x4s, guides, and permits.
- Easy to book. Everything is pre-arranged: flights, transport, meals, permits. All you need to do is just show up and go.
- Meet like-minded travellers. You’ll be with others who have chosen to go far off the beaten path. Great if you like company, storytelling around the fire, and new friendships.
- Set itinerary, no stress. Our itineraries are tried-and-tested to give you the best Socotra has to offer in just 8 days.
These types of tours are best for solo travellers or couples looking for value and companionship. It’s also great for first-timers to Socotra who want a well-organised intro to the island. Last but not, it suits adventurers who enjoy being social and flexible.
Private Tours: Tailored to Your Needs
Can’t make the group dates? Prefer your own pace? Our private Socotra tours are built around you. Choose your own dates (subject to flight availability), adjust the itinerary to your interests, and travel with your own guide and vehicle.
We recommend booking at least 4–6 months in advance. That’s because flights to Socotra are limited and sell out early, especially in high season.
Benefits of a Private Tour:
Want to spend more time hiking the Dixam Plateau? Less time on beaches, more in the canyons? With a private tour, you get to customise your itinerary. It also means you can travel with your partner, friends or family- great for special occasions or those who value space.
Private tours mean you’re not tied to a fixed schedule. Perfect if you have limited time or want to extend your trip beyond Socotra.
Private tours are best for:
- Photographers, researchers, or nature lovers who want flexibility.
- Families or small private groups.
- Travellers with specific dates or interests.
Still Not Sure?
A group tour will give you an affordable way to experience Socotra, while still keeping things sociable and intimate. A private tour offers total control; you can enjoy more comfort and flexibility, but at a higher price point.
Either way, you’ll see the same surreal landscapes and meet the warm-hearted people of Socotra. And with Rocky Road Travel, you’ll get reliable logistics, expert local support, and the peace of mind that comes from booking with a team that knows the island inside out.
