At Rocky Road Travel, we run two confirmed tours in Papua New Guinea each year, timed around two of the country’s biggest cultural events: the Mount Hagen Festival in August and the Goroka Festival in September. Both trips are adventures in small groups and designed to take you well beyond the usual tourist trails.

Why Book Our Papua New Guinea Tour Early?

One of the biggest reasons to book early is simple: availability.

Papua New Guinea has limited domestic flight capacity, particularly during major festival periods. Our itineraries include internal flights as we travel between Port Moresby and the Highlands, so booking earlier gives us more flexibility and helps avoid rising flight costs.

Then there’s the size of our groups. We keep our Papua New Guinea tours small, with no more than 13 travellers. That makes for a much more personal experience, but it also means places disappear quickly. Mount Hagen or Goroka in 2027?

Our Mount Hagen Festival Tour 2027 runs from 10 to 17 August. We begin in Port Moresby before flying into the Highlands, visiting local villages and communities and spending two full days at the Mount Hagen Festival.

Our Goroka Festival Tour 2027 runs from 14 to 20 September. Again, the journey starts in Port Moresby before heading into the Highlands and on to Goroka for two days at one of Papua New Guinea’s most famous cultural celebrations.

Expect colourful sing-sings, traditional dress, music, dancing and the chance to see communities from across the country gather in one place.
